The learning and research development of the department primarily focuses on ceramic materials, metallic materials, and electronic materials. In terms of ceramic materials, applications extend beyond traditional building materials, refractories, and decoration to advanced electronic ceramics (such as high-temperature superconductors, capacitors, and varistors), high-strength structural ceramics (abrasive/structural materials), thermal barrier coatings (such as space shuttle heat shield tiles), and wear-resistant coatings for cutting tools (such as tungsten carbide, titanium carbide, and titanium nitride). Regarding metallic materials, studies cover basic properties of metallic materials, metal processing, and manufacturing processes. In the field of electronic materials, courses cover the principles, fabrication, and applications of semiconductors, ionic conductors, magnetic materials, and rechargeable materials. In addition to laboratory courses matching the curriculum, undergraduate students of NCKU MSE are required to take thesis research courses in their junior and senior years to lay a solid foundation for their future academic research and professional careers in industry.
