In this talk, we will summarize what we have been working on improving the performance of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). Primary focuses are catalyst layer enhancement through laser processes and bipolar plate development in the past few years. Pt nanoparticles are deposited on to gas diffusion layer (GDL) by using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in argon atmosphere. The resulting catalyst layer is optimized and characterized for the application in PEM fuel cell. Furthermore, a picosecond laser was used to fabricate grooves on the GDL surface to increase the effective surface area for Pt deposition, thereby reducing local Pt film thickness. Pt mass specific power density of over 8 kW/g at 1 atm can be achieved.
