演講摘要:
The energy transition is one of today's greatest societal challenges. Electrocatalyst materials, central to electrochemical energy conversion devices like fuel cells and water electrolyzers, are expected to play an increasingly crucial role in the near future. To enable the widespread adoption of electrochemical systems, the urgent challenge in developing electrocatalyst materials is achieving a combination of high activity and long-term stability at low cost. Despite the variety in electrocatalyst materials, driven by the different types of electrochemical systems (such as noble vs. non-noble metals in acidic vs. alkaline media) and the specific requirements of various electrochemical processes (oxidation or reduction reactions of different species at varying electrode potentials), the activity and stability properties of electrocatalysts largely depend on their (surface) chemistry and structure. These properties, and their changes over time, can be directly studied using in situ or operando synchrotron X-ray techniques. This presentation will highlight the versatility of these techniques in addressing key challenges in electrocatalyst materials development.
