High-entropy-alloy (HEA) nanocrystals, composed of at least five metallic elements, have emerged as highly versatile catalysts due to their vast chemical diversity and tunability. However, effective methods for synthesizing HEA nanocrystals with controlled surface atomic structures have been lacking, limiting their potential to enhance catalytic performance. In this talk, I will introduce a straightforward yet robust strategy for creating a library of facet-controlled HEA nanocrystals, incorporating up to ten distinct metallic elements. Utilizing a solution-phase, layer-by-layer epitaxial growth method, we have designed 638 unique catalysts, each consisting of between 5 to 10 elements. This technique enables the deposition of subnanometer-thick HEA atomic layers on nanocrystal seeds with {100} and {111} facets, resulting in HEA shells with square and hexagonal atomic arrangements, respectively. Our approach has identified three distinct facet-dependent catalytic activities of these HEA nanocrystals in both electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, using in situ synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density-functional theory calculations. This work pioneers facet engineering within the multi-elemental space, addressing critical needs for the future development of HEA nanocrystals in catalysis.
