Developing Transition Metal Oxides and Nitrides for Photoelectrochemical Energy Conversion

Finding suitable light absorbers and catalysts are imperative in the pursuit of a sustainable energy future via photoelectrochemical (PEC) energy conversion. To date, however, materials that simultaneously fulfill the efficiency, stability, and economic requirements have yet to be found. The first part of this talk highlights recent works on developing ternary metal oxides, including copper iron oxide and copper vanadium oxides as photoelectrodes. The PEC characteristics of these materials are systematically investigated, and the results shed light into composition-function relationships, effects of nanoscale heterogeneities, and small polaron formation. Comparing to oxides, transition metal nitrides are expected to exhibit improved charge transport properties given their higher bonding covalency. However, these materials are generally metastable and difficult to synthesize due to chemical stability of nitrogen molecules. I will address the crucial role of oxygen impurities in assisting synthesis of bixbyite-type Ta2N3 thin films, as well as on defining their optoelectronic properties. Structural analysis confirms that oxygen impurities incorporate in the structural vacancies and act as compensating dopants, leading to seven orders of magnitude variation in electrical conductivity. These results underscore the versatility of transition metal nitrides, inform rational design principles for their electronic structure, and open avenues of developing the previously underexplored nitride chemical space for PEC energy conversion application.
