Metasurfaces and Flat Optics for Imaging, Sensing, and Lasing Applications

Metasurfaces composed of sub-wavelength artificial structures enable spatial modulations of phase, polarization, dispersion on demand, leading to a plethora of flat optics. Due to the flat-profile nature of metasurfaces, they demonstrate some potential in replacing the bulky three-dimensional optical elements in the optical systems. In this talk, I will report the developments and applications of metasurfaces in endoscopic imaging, imaging in augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) system, depth sensor, and super-chiral laser. In biomedical imaging application, we integrated a metalens into the design of an endoscopic optical coherence tomography catheter to achieve near diffraction-limited imaging and maintain high-resolution. We developed an achromatic flat lens to resolve the bottleneck of current AR/VR technologies. In the sensing application, we developed a compact depth sensor that is inspired by the jumping spider. It combines metalens optics with efficient computations to measure depth from image defocus. In the lasing application, we reveal a metasurface-enhanced laser that produces high-purity and high quantum number of non-symmetric vortex beams that lase simultaneously. These state-of-the-art metasurfaces open a path to a new type of platform for today’s optical devices and lay promising groundwork of metasurface systems in the future decades toward advanced nanophotonics and technologies.
