Properties of Semiconductor Crystals Are Facet-Dependent from Lattice Deviations

演講摘要:
Semiconductor crystals exposing different surfaces show facet-dependent electrical conductivity, photocatalytic activity, light absorption, piezoelectricity, and magnetism behaviors. Just like grilling a piece of meat, all these phenomena arise from greater facet-specific lattice deviations in the surface layer region, while the crystal bulk also exhibit slight cell constant changes with different particle shapes. Synchrotron XRD patterns and FFT processing of HR-TEM images reveal the structural variations. In addition to the facet effect, optical properties of semiconductor crystals also display size dependence. Optical size effect has been found to also relate to tiny cell constant changes.
