Recent advancements in integrated nanosystems have offered unprecedented opportunities for both photo- and electro-catalytic CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR). In this presentation, the design concepts and fabrication techniques of some nanosystems will be introduced, especially, 2D-layered materials and single-atom catalysts (SACs). Take 2D-layered materials as an example, a perfect planar layer structure is usually inactive. However, orders of magnitude enhancement in CO2RR can be achieved with defect engineering, surface modification, and heterostructure of the 2D-layered materials. Meanwhile, in comparison to the conventional symmetric SACs, asymmetric SACs also deliver superior selectivity and accelerated CO2RR kinetics. These improvements are mainly due to the electronic structure modulation of the catalyst, favoring the adsorption/activation of CO2, and formation of optimal intermediates, as well as effective charge transfer.
