The Future of Energy Storage: Exploring Aluminum-ion Batteries

Developing new rechargeable battery systems could fuel various energy applications, from personal electronics to grid storage. Ionic liquid electrolytes exhibit the advantages of low flammability, high thermal stability, low volatility, and wide electrochemical stability window and are consequently intensively investigated for potential electrochemical batteries. This talk gives the Lin group's recent progress in combining AlCl3-based ionic liquid electrolytes and advanced electrode materials (carbon and sulfur) for aluminum-based batteries. Examples include natural graphite, three-dimensional graphitic foams, graphitic multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), sulfur/MWCNT, AlCl3/Urea, AlCl3/1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and AlCl3/1,2-dimethyl-3-propylimidazolium chloride. The Lin group's main interests are developing advanced rechargeable aluminum-based batteries, pursuing fundamental studies on electrode intercalation/deintercalation and conversion behavior, and exploring potential applications, especially in grid storage. This talk provides perspectives on aluminum-based batteries engineering in general.
