Optical Force and Nanomaterials

內容摘要:
Photon has momentum and its transfer to small materials generates mechanical force. When intense laser beam is focused by a microscope, pN-order force is loaded on a microparticle. This phenomenon enables us to trap, transfer, and manipulate it freely in solution in non-contact and non-destructive way. Since 1988 we introduced this optical trapping method to chemistry and material science and have demonstrated its high potential not only in their manipulation but also nanoparticle assembling, polymer fabrication, and molecular crystallization. Since 2015 we have found that optical trapping of microparticles, nanoparticles, and proteins shows unique behavior at solution interface and named it “Optically Evolved Assembling and Swarming”, which is never observed by conventional optical trapping in solution. In this lecture we show our recent representative results, consider their dynamics and mechanism, and foresee some future applications.
